The Seyfert galaxy Markarian 315 has an extraordinary 80 kiloparsec long jet-like feature visible in the redshifted [OIII] lambda 5007 and Hα emission (MacKenty 1986). Recently obtained HST broad band imagery, combined with VLA radio maps, argues strongly for a tidal origin of this feature. An image with the HST Planetary Camera in the F785LP passband shows a second nucleus located 2" from the Seyfert nucleus. The VLA observations of Wilson and WIllis (1980) and Ulvestad, Wilson, and Sramek (1981) showed an extended diffuse morphology. Additional VLA observations confirm the diffuse morphology and do not detect the jet-like feature seen in optical narrow band images and spectra. Markarian 315 appears to be undergoing a tidal interaction and/or merger. The jet-like feature is explained as a tidal tail photoionized by UV photons from the Seyfert nucleus and the diffuse radio emission results from an extended starburst region.
