We summarize the status of the search for spectral lines in the gamma ray burst spectra accumulated by the Spectroscopy Detectors of the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO). The mystery of burst origin has increased the interest in the absorption lines in the energy range 20-50 keV observed by detectors such as HEAO-1, KONUS and GINGA. The BATSE results are evaluated in light of the GINGA detection of cyclotron lines; we do not find an inconsistency in the frequency of line detection by these two instruments. Our conclusions are based on a search of most of the strong bursts observed by BATSE to date, and simulations of the observability by BATSE of the lines detected by GINGA. Our simulations and calculations show that the significance of a line detection scales approximately as the square of the continuum signal-to-noise, the square of the line equivalent width and the inverse of the line's intrinsic width. The BATSE research of the UCSD group is supported by NASA contract NAS8-36081.
