The amount of catalogued galaxies decreases with galactic latitude due to the obscuration caused by our own galaxy. The region behind the galactic plane is called the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA). An increase in the knowledge of the properties of galaxies in the ZOA is an important complement of studies of large-scale structure. An optical search for galaxies in the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS) prints has been initiated in the region ∣b∣ {<=} 10(deg) and 160(deg) {<=} l {<=} 200(deg) . HI measurements have been made for galaxy candidates in this zone using the Arecibo Observatory 305m radio telescope. The list of galaxy candidates is being compiled by visual inspection of the POSS E prints with 12x magnification and illumination from below. The velocity range searched covers -360 km/s {<=} v {<=} 13000 km/s. Emission has been detected for 57 of 166 candidates observed so far (34%). Upon completion, the survey will cover the region between RA=04h to 08h and DEC=0(deg) to 37(deg) . We will present preliminary results from our study. This will include 21 cm HI spectra and HI computed parameters for these previously uncatalogued galaxies.
