We investigate the environmental dependence of the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies by studying a sample of elliptical galaxies in compact groups. This study suggests that the ellipticals in compact groups lie off of the fundamental plane defined by ellipticals in other environments because they have low central velocity dispersions. The isophotal shapes of the elliptical galaxies in compact groups are also different from those in other environments, with boxy isophotes being less common, and irregular isophotal features being more common. Moreover, the low velocity dispersions appear to be correlated with isophotal shape such that the elliptical galaxies with disky or irregular isophotes have lower central velocity dispersions than those with boxy isophotes. These results indicate that the environment of the compact groups, which is favorable for tidal interactions, has modified the structure and dynamics of the elliptical galaxies within them. They also suggest caution in using the fundamental plane relationships to obtain distances to elliptical galaxies without regard for their environment.
