We have undertaken a program to obtain 2 - 2.5microns spectra of a complete sample of luminous infrared galaxies. We report here first results for the ultraluminous members of that sample (L_IR >= 10(12) Lsun). Our spectra were obtained with the CGS4 spectrometer on UKIRT, and have a spectral resolution R=340. Numerous emission lines, especially Brgamma , HeI, and the v=1-0 and v=2-1 transitions of H_2, as well as absorption features from CO and other species in stellar atmospheres, are seen at high signal to noise. Broad Brgamma lines (FWHM > 1000 km s(-1) ) have been detected in several galaxies. Interestingly, the H_2 lines in those galaxies are apparently no broader than the instrumental resolution of 1000 km s(-1) . We will discuss the astrophysical implications of these and other features of the spectra.
