Traditional methods of ring analysis currently fit an individual peak of power with a Lorentzian or asymmetric line profile plus a background that varies with wavenumber but is constant in frequency. The new method presented here, simultaneously fits all the visible peaks at each wavenumber of interest along with a frequency varying background. This technique demonstrates that the line asymmetry found in high-degree mode ridges is largely due to the overlap of power from nearby peaks in combination with a frequency dependent background and does not represent the same type of inherent asymmetry seen in the line profiles of low-degree modes.
