The NASA mission EPOXI combines two exciting science investigations (EPOCh + DIXI) in a 16-month low-risk, affordable mission of opportunity that uses the existing, flight-proven Deep Impact spacecraft. The DIXI component is a follow up on the exciting, unexpected discoveries made at comet Tempel 1. The target is comet 85P/Boethin, a small, short-period comet with an 11.2 year orbit, discovered in 1975. The objectives of this mission are to understand the nature of cometary nuclei and what they can tell us about the origin of the solar system. EPOXI is funded by the NASA Discovery Program.
