We report a study of a newly discovered planetary nebula surrounding RX J2117.1+3412, a hot pulsating pre-white dwarf first identified on the ROSAT wide-field survey. This exciting object appears to be the "missing link" which finally connects the pulsating planetary central stars and the PG1159 stars. RXJ 2117 is a ROSAT source, and a member of the PG 1159-035 spectroscopic class. It is also a pulsating variable star of the DOV class. Time-series photometry reveals that the observed pulsation periods are intermediate between the pulsating PG1159 stars and the longer period pulsating planetary nebula central stars such as K1-16; the periods indicate that the evolutionary status of this star is between the hot pre-white dwarf stars and the pulsating central stars of ordinary planetary nebulae. Images through narrow-band H alpha and OIII filters were obtained at the Erwin W. Fick Observatory of Iowa State University using a TI 800x800 CCD system on the 0.6m telescope operating at f/4. The nebula is extremely large, with a mean diameter in both H-alpha and OIII of 13 arc minutes. It is bipolar in shape, with a somewhat spiral structure. The existence of such a large, and therefore presumably old nebula around this object confirms that it is a transition object between the pulsating OVI planetary central stars and the pulsating PG 1159 stars.
