Using an overlapping plate technique developed by Dr. H.K. Eichhorn, we are re-reducing the Southern polar zone (-70 to -90 degrees) of the Yale Photographic Star Catalogue. The Southern polar zone is based on plates exposed in 1942 and reduced using a single plate technique in 1971. Since this region was compiled, there have been substantial advances in theory, improvements in reference star catalogues, as well as increased computation ability. The application of these improved reduction procedures and resources to the original measurements will yield significantly more precise and accurate star positions. These new estimates of early star positions will yield improved proper motions, which are an invaluable component in determination of stellar and galactic distances and in tests of galactic dynamical models. This work was undertaken with the support of the Florida Space Consortium, Division of Sponsored Research at University of Florida and Yale University.
