We report results of high speed multicolor photometry of HV Vir obtained only four days after the onset of its recent outburst. Short periodic light variations with an amplitude of 0.06 mag were detected that could best be fitted by a period of either 82.1 or 84.6 min. The large outburst amplitude of HV Vir of about 7 mag as well as the long time interval between the last eruption suggest the detection of a new WZ Sge type dwarf nova. By comparison with the outburst of WZ Sge in 1978 we conclude, that the periodic light variations found for HV Vir during our observations are associated with the orbital period rather than with the superhump period.
