Visible spectroscopic studies of a coal pitch extract, achieved by matrix isolation spectroscopy are presented, and their implications for the identification of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) are discussed. The coal pitch extract under consideration consists mainly of aromatic molecules and, as such, is assumed to be representative to some extent of an interstellar mixture. It is shown that the extract has only few strong transitions in the visible between 3800 and 5000 A. The spectral characteristics of the measured transitions are identified and compared to astrophysical observations. Some similarities between the bands (e.g., widths and intensities) were found, but no agreement on the position was discovered. It is concluded that according to current astronomical observations an intimate mixture of neutral PAH molecules with approximate size of 20 carbon atoms is not likely to be the carrier of the known diffuse bonds but that their ions and/or larger PAH molecules are good candidates.
