Recent observational results from deep extra-galactic surveys show weak evolution in the galaxy merger rate over the last 8 Gyr. Although the observed evolution is weaker than that predicted for the merger rate of isolated dark matter halos, it agrees with recent simulations that track the evolution of galaxy-sized sub-halos. I will discuss the uncertainties associated with measuring the merger rate, and the implications for the evolution of red spheroidals and infrared luminous galaxies since z˜ 1.
