Results are presented for studies on ionized gas in active galaxies. The extended high excitation gas studied in optical emission lines covers a survey of Seyfert galaxies and implications for unified schemes; ionization and excitation of the gas; ionization cones (V-shaped emission line regions with apex at the active nucleus); and interactions between radio jets/lobes and gas in the narrow line region. Also reported are abundances and kinematics of active galaxies; double-peaked broad lines in active galaxies; and hot gas studied in X-ray emission. In addition, results are presented for the studies of dusty tori in active galaxies and unified models; the origin of radio galaxies; water vapor megamasers in active galaxies; an IUE study of the nature of the featureless continuum in Seyfert 2 galaxies; and studies of Herbig-Haro objects and supernova remnants.
