The unusual eruption of V838 Mon in 2002 illuminated a spectacular light echo, imaged regularly by HST. I have continued to monitor the star itself since 2003, using the CCD/IR camera on the SMARTS 1.3m telescope at CTIO and the optical spectrograph of the SMARTS 1.5m.
V838 Mon has an unresolved B3 V companion star. Beginning in late 2006, the brightness of the B3 star began to fluctuate, and H-alpha went into strong emission. It appears that the slowly expanding ejecta from the eruption of V838 Mon have now reached the B companion. A small ionized region around the B star produced the H-alpha emission during the initial stages of the interaction, but at the present time the B star has been completely engulfed and has disappeared.
