In the last half of 2006 and early 2007, eta Car unexpectedly faded after steadily increasing brightness for a decade. The fading occurred halfway between predicted "spectroscopic events" when eta Car was well-separated from the proposed secondary star. Photometry from
HST/WFPC2 shows that the change in brightness occurred in the central star and not in the nebula. The fading was a uniform decrease in continuum brightness, but was not as dramatic in the near-UV. Spectra during and after the decline, from GMOS on Gemini-South and VLT/UVES, reveal subtle changes in the line profiles including the appearance of a P Cyg profile in Halpha which support a change in the latitude-dependent wind
of the massive primary as the origin of this mid-cycle activity.
