We present sensitive phase-referenced VLBI results on the radio continuum emission from the luminous submillimeter galaxy (SMG) GOODS 850-3 at z=1.87. The observations were carried out at 1425 MHz using the High Sensitivity Array (HSA: VLBA + phased VLA + GBT).
Our sensitive VLBI image of GOODS 850-3 at 0.49 x 0.35 arcsec resolution, obtained by applying a Gaussian taper on the UV data, shows an unresolved continuum structure with a flux density of 0.15 mJy, consistent with previous VLA and MERLIN measurements. The intrinsic brightness temperature of this source is 10^4 K. This continuum source is over-resolved at the full resolution of our VLBI array (13.2 x 7.2 mas), with a 4σ point source upper limit of 26 μJy/beam, or an upper limit to the intrinsic brightness temperature of 10^6 K. The absence of any compact high-brightness temperature source suggests that there is no radio-loud AGN in this SMG.
Moreover, the radio continuum position of this galaxy coincides with a bright and extended near-IR source that nearly disappears in the deep HST optical image, indicating a dusty source of nearly 10 kpc in size. This, combined with our HSA results, suggests that the SMG GOODS 850-3 is powered by an extreme starburst.
