We have developed Stellar Locus Regression (SLR), a method to calibrate the optical and NIR colors of objects without the traditional use of standard stars. SLR fits the instrumental stellar colors to a universal, standard stellar locus, thereby making a single wholesale correction for instrumental zeropoints, atmospheric extinction, Galactic extinction, and aperture corrections. We have tested the method on SDSS photometry, and show that we can directly measure the canonical Galactic extinction values and the reddening law over a wide range of dust thicknesses, with 2% error. We show that SLR reproduces colors to about 1% or better in the i and z bands when observing at different airmasses. Finally, we use SLR-calibrated colors to estimate the redshift of galaxy clusters at 0.09 < z < 0.25. Averaging the colors of the brightest red-sequence cluster members, SLR colors are sufficiently accurate to recover the clusters' spectroscopic redshifts with 0.6% RMS residuals. SLR can be used to exploit data immediately at the telescope because the stars in any field can be used as calibrators. The data from upcoming large scale multiband surveys can be exploited almost immediately using this technique. Future work will involve a fuller quantitative exploration of the limits of the SLR technique, in terms of Galactic latitude, extinction, and the extent to which the observed stellar locus is indeed universal.
