LSST will provide an unprecedented wide area, deep, multi-wavelength data set capable of exploring key aspects of hierarchical galaxy formation and evolution such as the galaxy merger rate and mass assembly from the local Universe to z 1. One of the advantages of the LSST survey for studying the merger rate, is the dense sampling of parameter space. It will be possible to explore and quantify the incidence of mergers as function of environment, merger stage, stellar mass, luminosity, color, and redshift over an area 5000 times larger than previous surveys. We discuss the predicted capabilities of LSST in detecting galaxy mergers, using both simulations and observations from the CFHTLS-Deep Survey, as well as outline the possible morphological parameters that will be available in the LSST data releases.
