CN containing molecules are observed in both the interstellar medium, ism ( 30), and the ionosphere of Titan and are a component of living organisms. They are observed and identified directly by mm and micro-wave spectroscopies in the ism and indirectly from their mass spectra on Titan where the identification comes through the modeling of ionospheric chemistry. In determining production routes and rates in the former case and realistic chemical models in the latter, a great deal of kinetic data at appropriate temperatures are required. These required data are for ion-molecule reactions and electron-ion dissociative recombination. In the present study, we have investigated the electron-ion recombinations of protonated HCN, CH3CN, C2H5CN and of several small, nitrogen containing, heterocyclic rings, such as pyridine (C5H5N) and pyrimidine (C4H4N2), and their proton bound dimers as a function of temperature. It is found that the dimer ions recombine more rapidly than the monomers, as predicted by the theory of Bates, and show less temperature dependence. The flowing afterglow technique used to make the measurements will be described and the accumulated data reviewed. Funding by NASA is gratefully acknowledged.
