We are proposing to pursue a program using the RC-Spectrograph obtain flux calibrated, aperture matched observations of newly discovered Lyman-(alpha) emitters in the COSMOS deep field at z~0.3. The spectra will be used to examine the effect of dynamical structure, star formation rates, elemental composition, and extinction on the observed Ly(alpha)/H(alpha) ratio, in order to determine the relative importance of metallicity, dust and gas kinematics on the resultant Ly(alpha) emission from star-forming galaxies. Today, many of the trends concerning Ly(alpha) emission in galaxies at low and high redshifts are currently being debated, and the latest models used to fit the Ly(alpha) emission profiles are not constrained by observations of dust extinction and gas kinematics. The data obtained by this proposal will specifically address the debated trends and can then be used to constrain future models of Ly(alpha) emission from star forming regions.
