SONYC is a comprehensive project to establish the census of brown dwarfs and planetary-mass objects in nearby star forming regions. Our goal is to identify all young substellar objects down to a few Jupiter masses (~ 0.005 M_&sun;), i.e., the opacity limit for fragmentation. In our first survey region NGC1333 we see evidence for environmental effects in this mass regime (Scholz et al. 2009). Here we propose to test these initial findings by carrying out a deep I, J, K photometric survey in the Lupus-3 molecular cloud with the CTIO 4-m telescope. We will use the optical and near-infrared photometry in combination with Spitzer data to identify candidates for spectroscopic follow-up. The results will be compared with our findings in other regions, specifically to address the following questions: 1) How abundant are BDs and PMOs in comparison with stars? 2) How does the environment affect the bottom end of the Initial Mass Function? Lupus is an excellent test case and will provide new constraints for brown dwarf formation scenarios.
