Following the commissioning of the One Degree Imager (ODI) on the WIYN 3.5m telescope, Yale intends to devote a large fraction of its share of the telescope to large surveys with scientific products that span a range of astrophysical problems. At least 90 nights of Yale time are committed to this effort, and we expect to add to that allocation, perhaps in collaboration with other WIYN partners and members of the community. A current strawman proposal for the survey will be presented that includes emulating the proposed LSST survey in terms of depth and cadence, but (necessarily) covering only a small fraction of the sky (perhaps 100 square degrees). Fields will be chosen both at random, and for specific scientific purposes. We may also carry out more targeted observations of specific fields. Our science goals are focussed on topics that derive particular benefit from the excellent image quality provided by the orthogonal transfer chips, including (but not limited to) astrometry and galaxy morphology.
We are actively soliciting outside collaborators for the planning and execution of this survey. The observational plan is still flexible, and can be changed and enhanced to accommodate new participants. We look forward to discussions with potential collaborators and others as we seek to optimize the scientific return of this effort.
