I will review the current status of research on the properties of interstellar dust and ices studied by infrared spectroscopy. Ongoing investigations of the thermal evolution of ices in molecular clouds and regions of active star formation will be described. Data from the infrared spectrometer on board the Spitzer Space Telescope will be compared with data for laboratory analogs to demonstrate the value of the analogs as an indispensable aid to interpretation of the observations. Data for reddened background field stars establish the properties of the ices in cold, quiescent clouds, and provide a benchmark for studying their physical and chemical evolution in the environments of young dust-embedded stars. I will conclude with a brief review of prospects for future research with new infrared facilities that will become available in the next few years. This research is supported by funding from the NASA Astrobiology Institute and from the NASA Exobiology and Evolutionary Biology program.
