Black holes probe the fundamental nature of Einstien's gravity. Both the birth of black holes during core-collapse and the collisions among black holes shed gravitational waves that carry details about the structure of space-time and exotic states of matter. Accreting supermassive black holes power quasars that are used to examine the historical growth of galaxies and black holes. Under many circumstances accreting black holes launch relativistic jets whose stability and high-energy radiative emissions remain an enigma. In the past, it has been difficult to understand such black hole systems through analytical theory alone. Modern simulations have finally allowed a comprehensive study of these phenomena. I will discuss how simulations have pushed forward our understanding where analytical theory has failed and outline how future simulations of the physics near black holes will be vital to future progress in black hole astrophysics.
