The Submillimeter Array, being built near the summit of Mauna Kea by the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics (Taiwan), has the potential to make unique observations of the newly recognized population of luminous high redshift dusty galaxies. Prospects for submillimeter continuum observations include (1) accurate position determinations for improved associations at optical/infrared/radio wavelengths, (2) deep integrations that probe beyond the confusion limit of single dish telescopes, and (3) imaging the detailed morphologies of the stronger sources at kiloparsec size scales.
