We propose FLAMINGOS JHK imaging of the entire W5 HII/star forming region, at a distance of ~2 kpc, enabling the study of the young high-mass stellar clusters that comprise the structure, ranging in size from ~40 to ~200 stars. The FLAMINGOS observations will be a key element in an optical/infrared/millimeter-wave study of this region, with the goals of: 1) surveying all groups and clusters to masses below 1 M_&sun; with FLAMINGOS and Spitzer, 2) comparing the star and planet formation properties and evolutionary classes of stars in clusters across W5 using their 0.5-24 (micron) SEDs, and 3) characterizing the interaction between the hot, high-mass stars in these clusters and their surrounding ISM. FLAMINGOS photometry in the 1-2.2 (micron) regime is necessary to detect and characterize the photospheric emission from the embedded stars. In addition, the sub- arcsecond resolution expected with FLAMINGOS will be used to disentangle potential source confusion in the > 2 arcsec angular resolution Spitzer data. The combined FLAMINGOS+Spitzer data will provide the first inventory of disks and protostars in this large (2° × 1.5°) star forming region.
