Good understanding of the broad emission line region is necessary for determining accurate black hole masses and tying black hole growth to galaxy evolution. However, existing telescope facilities are incapable of resolving the inner structure of quasars. Fortunately nature provides us with a powerful telescope in the form of gravitational microlensing. The quadruply imaged quasar SDSS J1004+4112 exhibits emission line variations in the blue wings of component A that are not seen in component B. These variations appear to be caused by microlensing of the broad emission line region along the line of sight to component A (Richards et al. 2004), likely resolving structure on scales smaller than 10^16 cm in the broad emission line region (for an effective resolution of 5x10^-7 arcseconds). Our existing spectroscopic monitoring campaign with the ARC 3.5m has reached the limits of its capability. We propose to continue monitoring changes in the optical spectrum of SDSS J1004+4112 using GMOS-N. Determining the structure of the broad emission line region requires S/N and resolution constraints that no other telescope/instrument combination can meet. We request a 60 minute MOS exposure of the system twice per block of GMOS queue time between October and January. Our total request (including overhead and a short pre-imaging exposure) is for 12.25 hours and can be done as a filler program in poor observing conditions.
