Cosmic processes accelerate particles to energies far exceeding the capability of any existing or planned Earth-based machine. With the Earth's atmosphere acting as a "fixed target" for cosmic rays, the CM collision energy may reach values up to two orders of magnitude greater than that attainable at the Large Hadron Collider. Thus, the very highest energy cosmic rays are possible probes of phenomena beyond the Standard Model of particle physics such as the Grand Unification of forces or perhaps even higher dimensional string theories. The Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology group at UT-Dallas is currently exploring the physics of extremely high energy cosmic ray (EHECR) events through the analysis of existing data and the simulation of EHECR induced air showers. In addition, the group is participating in the Orbiting Wide-angle Light Collector (OWL) experiment, a NASA sponsored space-based cosmic ray detector system to be launched later this decade.
