The bifurcated shape of the secular brightness decrease vs perihelion distance curve is explained by the existence of two groups of periodic comets with different granulometric compositions. This conclusion implies the possibility of different origins of the dust component in the two groups of comets and may indicate that the groups themselves are of different origin (e.g., formed in different regions of the protosolar nebula).
