Time series analysis is applied to the separation of the external and internal signals from the geomagnetic field. The differentiation and filtering of the signals are described. The identification of the external signal is examined; long-term variations of the processed components of the geomagnetic field obtained from the Chambon la Foret, Hartland, Niemegk, and Eskdalemuir observatories are compared with long-term variations of geomagnetic indices. The correlation between activity indices and the Wolf number is studied. The internal signal is estimated by removing the identified external signal.
