If the the composition of comet comae does not vary from object to object, and if the gas-to-dust production ratio is rather low, water production rates and total comet magnitudes should be correlated. The work presented by the author at the Asteroid-Comets-Meteors conference of 1985 (Proceedings, p299) is updated using the entire set of IUE opbservations of comets. A general correlation law can be derived, although there are notable departures from the expected behavior. These will be discussed and the limits of the law will be clearly stated.
