A comparison is made between the ionospheric electron content measured at Xian in 1978-1979 and that calculated from International Reference Ionosphere IRI-79 (Lincoln and Conkright, 1981). It is shown that the electron content calculated from IRI-79 in spring is much lower and this could be due to the too-low electron density of the IRI model above the F2 peak level.
