The problem of the minimum distance between two common-focus orbits, as encountered in studies of comets and meteor streams, is investigated analytically. Scanning and alternating-iterative versions of a novel solution procedure are developed, compared to a number of previous methods, and shown to offer wide applicability without the need to select suitable initial conditions. Numerical results for comets 1882 II, 1969 I, and 1980 X are presented in tables.
