Photometric data required for the Hipparcos input catalog are reviewed and an observation strategy for these measurements is proposed. Multicolor photometric investigations of interstellar reddening, stellar distances age and temperature, red giant masses and luminosities, metal abundance, and binary stars are discussed. About 60% of the program stars have not been measured photoelectrically. No further ground based photometric observations are needed if stars are selected according to V magnitude. Multicolor photometry is needed in order to fully exploit data collected by Hipparcos in order to study stellar formation rates and the chemical evolution of our galaxy. Since accuracy is limited by scintillation more than by photon noise, consecutive mode photometers are comparable with multichannel devices as regards observing time.
