Photographs of Orion taken in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum have shown it to be embedded in an extensive region of diffuse light on which the Barnard Loop nebula appears as a minor feature. Ultraviolet maps of the main Orion region, including the Barnard Loop nebula obtained from the S2/68 data, are presented and discussed in terms of scattering by dust and emission from hydrogen gas in the area. Attention is given to the Barnard Loop nebula, and the phase function of the dust. The high background nebulosity of the Orion region is probably due to back scattering of radiation from the hot blue Orion stars by a large mass of dust beyond the stars. Superimposed on this nebulosity, Barnard's Loop can be seen. Its intensity is consistent with that expected from continuum emission from hydrogen gas, but in the west of the Loop most of the emission must come from scattering by dust of radiation from local hot stars.
