An efficient scheme for calculating the structure, evolution and thermal stability of contact binaries is described. By means of a generalized Henyey method the system is calculated as a whole, including both components and their interaction. As representative applications, evolutionary calculations are presented for thermal relaxation oscillations and for a chemical evolution. The formulation of the thermal stability problem of contact binaries shows that the eigenvalues can also be calculated by means of this scheme making use of a contour-integral method. General properties of linear series of equilibrium systems are discussed, and the connection with the stability problem is shown.
