Scientific paper

The future development of human colonies on planets outside the solar system is assessed in terms of the need for metals. Different types of planetary systems, and their potential for colonization, are discussed. An extensive description of geological processes and their relation to the production of metals is made, including continental drift, plate tectonics, vulcanism, sea floor spreading, and hot spots. It is suggested that life may have had a major role to play in the production of the oceans. It is concluded that the absence of such complex processes on other planets will result in disaster for many colonization attempts.
