An account of the spectral evolution of Nova FH Ser from optical maximum to minimum is presented, based on observations made between 1970 and 1978 with the Asiago telescopes. The optical light curve had a pronounced dip in the transition phase. Wide emission bands of hydrogen and metals were observed during the early decline, accompanied by blueward displaced absorption systems of increasing radial velocity. By the end of March 1970 the emission bands split into two separate components, the blue stronger than the red. A progressive increase of excitation was observed after attainment of the nebular stage, which was characterized by strong forbidden O III and N II emission lines which persisted after the minimum. Most of the lines weakened and disappeared by 1972, with the minimum characterized by relatively weak Balmer lines and the emission lines of He II 4686 and N III 4640.
