Conditions which double stars must fulfill in order to be astronometrically observable by Hipparcos are determined. Characteristics of known double stars which Hipparcos can determine are considered. The probability of binary stars being recognized as such after data processing is discussed. Methods for determining position, proper motion, and parallax of stars recognized as double are given. With maximum separation of 5 arcsec between the two components if the telescope is trained on one of them, and 10 arcsec if it is pointed between them, 40% of double stars with known orbits can be observed.
