The Southworth-Hawkins D-parameter is constructed up to D values of 0.30 for the 546 comets with well determined orbits, in an examination of the possible genetic association between long period comets moving in similar orbits. Out of the 38 closest pairs and five closest groups having three or four members, only one case of possible identity is found and, outside of the Kreutz group of sungrazing comets, there are no cases of orbital similarity below a 20% expectation and no statistical evidence of genetic association above the level of chance coincidences. While the fragments of split cometary nuclei may survive a number of revolutions as active objects, their dispersion in the revolution periods is so large that they fail to pass the perihelia within the several centuries covered by comet observations and orbit computations.
