Depending on the evolutionary model adopted, the phenomenon of nulling is either intrinsic to all pulsars, occurring at a certain stage of their evolution, or peculiar to only a class of pulsars. The first model considered, involving the sudden ceasure of rotation and consequent abrupt death of pulsars, does not appear to explain the nulling phenomenon. A second model, in which evolution is partially discontinuous after field decay, is more plausible. It is concluded that detailed single-pulse observations of several pulsars are required before the origin of pulsar nulling can be established.
