The observations which led to identification of the three major components of the compact nonthermal radio source Sgr A West at the galactic center are reviewed. The nonthermal nature of the source was determined to have a size of no more than 0.1 arcsec with radio astronomy, which helped set its surface brightness temperature at more than 10 million K. Radio studies at 6 cm revealed the distinct locations of Sgr A West and Sgr A East, and showed the compact source to be embedded in Sgr West. Sgr A was concluded to comprise a nonthermal component and a compact nonthermal radio source, with the latter surrounded by ionized gas moving at high velocities. The compact source has displayed flux density variations on time scales as short as an hour which could, in comparison with data on other compact sources, indicate a self-absorbed incoherent synchrotron source.
