A description of the morphology of the optical M87 jet is presented on the basis of high-resolution UBV observations made with the 3.6-m CFH telescope at Mauna Kea and with the 106-cm reflector at Pic-du-Midi. The jet is shown to consist of a large number of discrete knots grouped in complexes, with no evidence for a continuous component between the knots. The complexes, including the nucleus, are spaced regularly along the jet with an approximate period of 2.9 arcsec, suggesting a periodic mechanism varying only in intensity which gives rise to the knots. Jet morphology is also observed to be independent of wavelength in the U, B and V bands as well as at 2 and 6 cm, suggesting that the physical parameters and spectral indices of the knots are constant throughout.
