Physical and chemical characteristics of Jupiter are briefly reviewed, with special attention given to properties of the Great Red Spot (GRS), the Jovian cloud system, and the planet's magnetic field. It is proposed that atmospheric-entry probes be used to sound the Jovian atmosphere and the GRS. Instruments to be employed and measurements to be performed by an interplanetary spacecraft, a Jupiter orbiter, and an atmospheric-entry probe are suggested. Ten questions concerning the Jovian atmosphere and the GRS are outlined which could be answered with the aid of direct measurements by an orbiter and an atmospheric-entry probe.
