A detailed quantitative description is given of the distortions in the microwave background radiation spectrum that would be expected as a consequence of an energy injection occurring during various phases of the expansion, and comparisons are made between these expected distortions and available experimental data. Theoretical analyses are developed for the interaction between radiation and ionized matter and for electron temperature in a nonequilibrium radiation field. The evolution of the background spectrum in the presence of some large energy release at an arbitrary epoch is studied by calculating the bremsstrahlung process and the simultaneous action of Compton scattering and bremsstrahlung during the relaxation period. Separate analyses are provided, depending on whether the energy injection occurred before or after the red shift parameter had attained the minimum value at which Compton scattering can establish a Bose-Einstein photon distribution. Another important consideration is to what extent a distortion can be damped out during subsequent evolution. Distortions of the microwave radiation spectrum due to recombination of the primeval plasma are also considered. All the results are then examined in order to draw up constraints on the possible thermal histories of the Universe.
