Optical spectroscopy of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 6814 was obtained at the SAAO over a two-year period from May 1983 to October 1985. During this period, the spectrum changed from Seyfert 1 to more closely resemble that of Seyfert 1.8-1.9. The H-beta flux decreased by more than a factor of 2 within two months. The decrease in the broad Balmer emission line strength was coupled with a decrease in the X-ray output.
