Following its launch in June 2008, well over a thousand blazars have been detected by Fermi. Even more important have been the statistical and episodic multi-wavelength observations that have been organized around Fermi. These are starting to settle some decade-long debates concerning the emission sites, the jet composition and velocity field and the jet collimation mechanism, pre-requisites to an understanding of jet origin. Recent progress and future prospects will be summarized.
