Swift is revolutionising our understanding of the outbursts of classical and recurrent novae. In this talk, I will review some of the work we have been undertaking with HST that complements Swift observations of selected objects. For example, HST imaging and ground-based spectroscopy have allowed us to determine the evolving geometry of the nebular remnant of the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi and relate this to the circumstances of its 2006 outburst. Similarly, we have used archival ACS data to identify the progenitor system of a (probable recurrent) nova in M31 for the first time. Further work on other novae will also be discussed.
