With the launch of MAXI in 2009, and Swift in orbit since 2004, a new era of all-sky X-ray astronomy has started. The combination of MAXI and Swift has the potential of finding, locating, and identifying X-ray transients in the X-ray to gamma-ray band (0.5-150 keV) on all time scales. This talk will introduce the special session on scientific opportunities for MAXI and Swift.
