Photometry of Nova LMC 1977b has been obtained from premaximum to the pretransition stage. A premaximum rise rate of 0.035 mag per hour in V was observed. The time and apparent visual magnitude of maximum is 2,443,216.34 + or - 0.24 JD and 10.67 + or - 0.04, respectively. The light curve is consistent with a moderately fast nova. A distance modulus of 18.6 + or - 0.2 for the LMC has been determined from the light curve and the (absolute magnitude, rate of decline) relation
